In early April they headed for the sun, San Marcos on the west coast of Mexico, an isolated town with one or two resorts. When they got to the place where they intended a 2-week stay, it appeared nearly empty, one might even say abandoned, a “Sandals” resort gone belly up.

They trundled down the small coastal road to a more modern high-rise hotel, the only one in the area, and booked two rooms. Paul needed to work remotely, but was riveted to CNN, as the “Awe and Thunder” campaign of air attacks on Baghdad began. Linda and Alia left, exploring the movie-set ghost town where Zorro rode and dashed in the film, each of them riding on horseback along the beach and through the tall cacti, bonding and paying attention perhaps to more important things.
